Today is save the internet day as the threat of ending net neutrality looms it’s ugly head again. Long story short – net neutrality means every website is treated equality and nobody has the right to tell you how to use it. Without it internet providers could decide how fast websites would load for you and which ones have to pay them or else. The people in now charge of the FCC are trying to get rid of it. Maybe the fact that they used to work for the big internet providers has something to do with it?

Just thought you would all like to know, seeing as how you read my comics on the internet.

Net “neutering” is only two years old, if it was such a risk we would have suffered already.

The official law that keeps Net Neutrality alive has only been two years old. Up until that point is was more of a guessing game of what the limitations of the internet providers could do. Examples are when Comcast was slowing down Netflix in 2014 for ransom and when Time Warner was doing that to Netflix and League of Legends just a few months ago

https://youtu.be/YDIKUhw_UHw debunking net neutering video…and yes I am spelling it wrong, as a jab.

Interesting, but what extra choices are internet services going to provide us? A cheaper option as long as we don’t watch netflix or hulu? They already don’t need options because most places only have one major internet provider. Why does Comcast care if everybody’s using Netflix so much? It shouldn’t matter to them what people are using the internet for. They’re not offering us the internet, just the means to get it. Your car company can’t tell you where to drive for fun. GoogleDocs can’t tell you to stop writing that awful fanfic. Spotify can’t raise your bill because too many people are listening to that new hit album.

Ultimately net neutrality is not supposed to be the government taking control of the internet. It’s supposed to be the government saying “Hey NOBODY can control the internet and that includes us.” So yes, there’s still work to be done on making sure the laws are right and true. But taking a step backwards and just giving all the power to the companies who already have all the power isn’t going to help, and having the government do whatever they want is also bad. So when I say “we need net neutrality” I’m saying that everybody needs to keep their self-centered meddling hands off of it.
