Man, the original Mario & Luigi is such a perfect game in my memory. The setting and characters, leaning into exploring a new land with its own consistent theming, the elegant way that new overworld abilities would become new Bros moves in battle, the way you’d unlock move variations to tackle different situations, just EVERYthing making the battles fun and interesting all the way through… Heck, even the minigames were solid and well thought-out, incorporating the “Mario and Luigi teaming up” theme that was such a new idea at the time!
I’ve been meaning to replay it; I think it’s been nearly two decades. I’m also a little worried that it won’t hold up to my memory of it? At very least, Fawful’s style of humor might seem pretty dated.
I’ve been replaying it on and off this year, and it’s still quite good. It’s so solid and simple and that makes it perfect. But yes, Fawful isn’t as funny these days as half the fun was how nobody had talked like that in a game before, let alone a Mario one.
